Urgent Call for Action: Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026
Umesh Dhakal
KNA-Canberra
Public consultation on the draft Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026 closes tomorrow, Thursday January 15 at 4:00 pm — an unacceptably short consultation period, particularly at this time of year, for legislation with such far-reaching implications. The Bill is scheduled to be voted on Monday.
We all want to combat extremism of every kind. But we must also ensure there are no unintended consequences that weaken the strengths of our democracy. This is complex, sensitive legislation. Being seen to act quickly under pressure is not the same as being genuinely effective. Good law requires time, care, expert advice, and meaningful consultation.
What you can do:
-
If possible, make a submission before the deadline
-
Contact your local member and ask for the consultation period to be extended
This is far too important to rush.
