Victorian Premier Reaffirms Commitment to Reproductive Rights

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has strongly defended women’s reproductive rights, declaring that access to abortion and reproductive healthcare in Victoria is “not up for debate.”

In a statement released on Friday, Ms Allan addressed growing national discussions about abortion laws and women’s access to healthcare, reaffirming the Victorian Government’s commitment to protecting existing rights and ensuring access to reproductive services.

“There has been a bit of talk around the country recently about abortion,” the Premier said. “Whether rights we fought for, and won, should somehow be up for debate again. In Victoria, they aren’t up for debate. Ever.”

The Premier highlighted reforms introduced by the Victorian Government aimed at improving access to reproductive healthcare, including protections around abortion clinics and measures to make contraception more accessible and affordable.

Ms Allan said the government had worked to ensure women can access healthcare services without harassment, intimidation, or interference. She also pointed to initiatives designed to reduce the cost of contraceptive options such as the pill and intrauterine devices (IUDs).

“Women deserve privacy. They deserve safety. They deserve respect,” she said.

The statement comes amid renewed national debate on reproductive rights and healthcare access across Australia. While abortion laws vary between states and territories, Victoria has been regarded as one of the jurisdictions with strong legal protections for reproductive healthcare.

The Premier pledged that her government would continue to defend those rights.

“As long as I am Premier, we will protect and defend women’s right to reproductive healthcare in this state,” Ms Allan said.

The statement reinforces the Victorian Government’s position that reproductive healthcare remains a fundamental healthcare service and that existing protections for women seeking care will be maintained.
