Women and Children Returning From Syria Arrive in Australia Under Security Monitoring
Australian authorities have confirmed that a new cohort of women and children returning from the Al-Roj internally displaced persons camp in Syria arrived in both Sydney and Melbourne on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
The joint operation involved members of the New South Wales and Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Teams (JCTT), who were deployed at international airports to manage the arrivals and conduct security procedures.
Four women and their children arrived at Sydney International Airport, while two women and their children landed at Melbourne International Airport.
Police said the returning group underwent a range of operational measures, including searches of personal belongings and the downloading of electronic devices for investigative purposes.
Authorities confirmed that no members of the cohort have been charged with any offences at this stage. However, investigations into Australians who travelled to Syria — including individuals who have since returned to Australia — remain ongoing.
Law enforcement agencies said they will continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure community safety is maintained.
The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team includes the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police Force, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and the NSW Crime Commission.
The Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Team comprises the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
Authorities urged anyone with information related to national security or suspicious activity to contact the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Support services are also available for members of the community who may feel distressed by the developments. People requiring assistance are encouraged to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
