Canberra, ACT — The Canberra Nara Candle Festival is set to return on Saturday, 25 October 2025, bringing a magical evening of light, culture, and community to the Canberra Nara Peace Park in Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla, from 4pm to 9pm.
This year’s festival marks the 31st anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Canberra and Nara, Japan, celebrating decades of friendship, cultural exchange, and peace.
First held in 2003, the event was inspired by Nara’s world-renowned Tokae Candle Festival. What began as a small ceremony has grown into one of Canberra’s most cherished multicultural celebrations, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Festival-goers can look forward to an array of Japanese cultural performances, arts and craft workshops, food stalls, and family-friendly activities. As night falls, the park will be transformed by the warm glow of over 2,000 candles, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere.
One of the festival’s highlights is the popular Cosplay Competition, where participants of all ages bring their favourite anime, manga, and pop culture characters to life. Contestants will compete for prizes while showcasing creativity, craftsmanship, and a love for Japanese culture.
Organisers say the event continues to embody the spirit of goodwill and cultural connection between Canberra and its Japanese sister city.
“The Canberra Nara Candle Festival is more than just a celebration of Japanese culture — it’s a symbol of friendship, peace, and shared community values,” a spokesperson said. “We’re excited to welcome everyone back for another unforgettable evening under the candlelight.”
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy all the activities, sample authentic Japanese cuisine, and take part in the festivities before the candle lighting at sunset.
