Sydney Man Charged Over Alleged Online Threat to Federal MP

A 37-year-old Sydney man has been charged after allegedly posting online threats targeting public officials, including a federal parliamentarian.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the charges followed an investigation into a social media comment that allegedly threatened to kill a federal MP. Police executed a search warrant at a unit in Liverpool and seized a mobile phone for forensic examination.

Investigators allege the man posted a series of threatening and offensive comments between December 2025 and February 2026 encouraging violence toward political leaders, government institutions and police.

He has been charged with 11 counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence under the Criminal Code Act 1995, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

The man appeared before Liverpool Local Court on 13 March 2026 and was refused bail. He is due to return to court on 16 March 2026.
