From Canberra to the Moon: Australia Powers Artemis II mission

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has officially launched its Artemis II mission, marking the first crewed journey beyond low Earth orbit in more than 50 years.

While the mission represents a major milestone in global space exploration, Australia’s capital is playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role.

At the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, located in Tidbinbilla in the Australian Capital Territory, engineers are providing essential communication and tracking services to support the spacecraft throughout its lunar journey. The facility is part of NASA’s global Deep Space Network, ensuring continuous contact with the crew aboard the Orion spacecraft.

Meanwhile, scientists at Mount Stromlo Observatory are contributing cutting-edge technology through the Australian National University’s Quantum Optical Ground Station (QOGS). This advanced system is demonstrating next-generation optical communications by receiving high-speed laser signals from Orion and converting them into usable data.

The ACT Government has supported this innovation with an $800,000 investment through its Priority Investment Program, helping to establish the facility and strengthen Australia’s role in deep space communication.

From Canberra to the Moon, Australia is helping shape one of the most significant space missions of the century.
