Documentary shines light on hidden cost of road trauma ahead of National Road Safety Week

Every year, around 1,300 people lose their lives on Australian roads, but far less attention is given to the almost 40,000 Australians who survive serious crashes with life-changing injuries.

Ahead of National Road Safety Week 2026, a new documentary titled Scar Tissue – The Hidden Cost of Road Trauma is bringing those untold stories into focus.

The documentary follows the experiences of five local Canberrans — Dylan, Cherilyn, Louise, Rory and Attique — who continue to live with the lasting physical, emotional and psychological impacts of road trauma. Their stories also highlight the ongoing effects on families, friends and the wider community.

The program aims to raise awareness about the long-term consequences of serious road crashes and encourage safer driving behaviours across the community.

Scar Tissue – The Hidden Cost of Road Trauma will air on WIN Television on Saturday, 16 May at 2:30 pm AEST.

National Road Safety Week runs from 17 to 24 May 2026 and encourages all Australians to commit to safer roads by taking the pledge to “Drive So Others Survive”.
