Government backs child health research with $5 million investment at MCRI anniversary

The Albanese Government has announced a $5 million investment to strengthen child health research in Australia, marking 40 years of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI).

The funding will establish a new Distinguished Fellow for Prevention and Early Intervention in Child Health, designed to accelerate research into the early causes and prevention of major childhood health conditions.

Focus on prevention and early intervention

The initiative will support a multi-disciplinary research program targeting some of the most common and high-impact childhood health challenges, including:

  • obesity
  • cardiovascular disease
  • mental health conditions
  • disability

Alongside the senior fellowship, the funding will also support early-career researchers, including postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and PhD scholarships, as well as broader research activities.

Strengthening Australia’s research capacity

The Government said the investment aims to improve long-term health outcomes by prioritising prevention and early intervention, helping reduce future pressure on the health system and aligning with broader demographic and health trends identified in national reports.

MCRI, Australia’s largest child health research institute, will lead the program and continue its role as a national and international centre for paediatric medical research.

Government statements

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the partnership reflects confidence in Australian-led medical research and its impact on future generations.

Health Minister Mark Butler said child health remains a national priority, highlighting the importance of improving diagnosis, early intervention, and treatment through research investment.
