Indian Press Association Expresses Concern Over Alleged Surveillance of Nepali Journalist Kishor Shrestha

The Press Association of India has expressed serious concern over reported harassment, surveillance, intimidation, and pressure targeting veteran Nepali journalist Kishore Shrestha.

In a press statement issued by Association President C.K. Nayak, the organization said it had taken note of reports alleging that Shrestha is facing various forms of pressure reportedly linked to attempts to compel him to disclose confidential journalistic sources following investigative reporting on matters of public interest.

The statement emphasized that protecting confidential sources is a fundamental principle of journalism and a cornerstone of press freedom. It added that any attempt to force a journalist to reveal sources constitutes an infringement on media independence.

The association strongly condemned all forms of intimidation, coercion, surveillance, and retaliatory actions against journalists, stating that such practices undermine the ability of the press to operate freely and independently.

It called on the relevant authorities to immediately end any such harassment and ensure the safety and rights of Mr. Shrestha as a journalist. The statement also noted that Shrestha is currently Vice President of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) and a former Chairman of the Press Council of Nepal.

The association further urged media organizations, press freedom advocates, and human rights institutions in Nepal and around the world to stand in solidarity with Shrestha.

Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom, the Press Association of India stated that a free and independent press is essential to democracy and must be protected from interference, intimidation, and fear.
