Australia and Thailand Strengthen Cooperation on Crime, Trade and Defence

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul have agreed to strengthen cooperation between Australia and Thailand across law enforcement, economic engagement, defence, science and innovation.

The leaders met at Parliament House in Canberra on 19 August during Anutin’s official visit to Australia. Their talks resulted in two joint statements focused on transnational crime and deepening economic engagement.

Under the agreement on transnational crime, Australia and Thailand will strengthen cooperation between law enforcement, customs, immigration and financial intelligence agencies to combat online scams, human and drug trafficking, money laundering and other forms of organised crime.

The leaders also agreed to expand trade and investment, particularly in agriculture and food, clean energy, critical technologies and the digital economy. The two countries will also work to make greater use of the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement.

Defence cooperation is also set to deepen, with Australia proposing regular Thailand-Australia Defence Ministers’ Meetings to support regional peace and stability. The leaders also welcomed increased cooperation in science, research and innovation.

The agreements mark another step in the strategic partnership between Australia and Thailand as both countries prepare to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.
