First international flight lands at Western Sydney Airport

Air New Zealand flight NZ165 from Auckland landed at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport this morning, marking the airport’s first international arrival. The flight was followed by a return service to Auckland later in the day.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

The Auckland route will operate three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Western Sydney International took seven years to construct with over 13,000 workers. Built to accommodate 10 million annual passengers, the facility features seamless check-in, baggage handling and security screening services and can be expanded to meet future demand.

The airport’s 24-hour cargo precinct, which has been in operation for nearly three months, has increased Sydney’s air cargo capacity by around 33 per cent. Additional international routes are planned: daily flights to Singapore begin on 23 November, with services to Ho Chi Minh City starting in January 2027 and Nadi in March 2027.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍

The Australian Government said the airport will boost Western Sydney’s economy by increasing import and export capacity, driving tourism and creating thousands of local jobs. Minister for Tourism Don Farrell said: “Western Sydney International is about much more than getting people from A to B. It’s about connecting Australian businesses to new markets, bringing people and ideas closer together and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment.”

The new airport provides residents in Sydney’s west with direct access to overseas flights without needing to travel across the city.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍
