Australia Hosts International Whaling Commission Meeting in Hobart, Advancing Whale Conservation
Australia hosted and chaired the 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Hobart from 28 September to 2 October 2026, bringing together scientists, government representatives and observers from around the world to discuss global whale conservation.
The meeting resulted in the Hobart Declaration and several initiatives aimed at strengthening whale protection and improving international cooperation.Key outcomes included action to address vessel strikes involving whales, improved responses to stranded marine mammals, and further work examining the impacts of the fish maw trade on whale populations.
Participants also advanced a new IWC Code of Conduct, intended to support responsible practices and cooperation among those involved in whale conservation. The meeting highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing threats to whales and protecting marine biodiversity. Vessel collisions, stranding incidents and trade-related pressures remain important issues for conservation authorities and researchers.
Australia’s hosting of the meeting placed Hobart at the centre of international discussions on whale conservation, reinforcing the role of scientific research, coordinated action and shared responsibility in protecting marine wildlife.
