Australia and Solomon Islands Commit to New Treaty to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Australia and the Solomon Islands have agreed to elevate their relationship through a new comprehensive bilateral treaty aimed at deepening cooperation, strengthening regional stability, and delivering practical benefits for both nations.

During high-level talks, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale reaffirmed their commitment to a partnership founded on mutual trust, respect, and open dialogue.

Australia also pledged support for Prime Minister Wale’s vision of expanding access to free education, with both governments working together to achieve meaningful outcomes for communities across the Solomon Islands.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the treaty would further strengthen cooperation between the two countries while advancing the next phase of the Policing Partnership Initiative, first announced at the Pacific Islands Forum.

The leaders emphasized that in an increasingly uncertain global environment, strong regional partnerships are more important than ever.

“While no country is immune from global uncertainty, our nations are stronger when we work together,” the leaders said, highlighting their shared commitment to security, development, and prosperity across the Pacific region.

The proposed treaty is expected to serve as a cornerstone of Australia–Solomon Islands relations and reinforce cooperation on education, policing, economic development, and regional resilience.
