Australian Government Funds Indigenous-Led Register to Help Combat Racism

SYDNEY — The Australian Government has announced funding for the Call It Out Register, an Indigenous-led initiative designed to document and respond to racism experienced by First Peoples.

The initiative is led by the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in partnership with the National Justice Project.

The funding has been welcomed as an important step towards addressing racism and discrimination against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Through consultations conducted for A Fair and Just Future for First Peoples: Social Justice Report 2025, First Peoples consistently identified racism as a major barrier to exercising their human rights.

Australia’s National Anti-Racism Framework has also emphasised the importance of stronger data collection and reporting to better understand the prevalence and impact of racism and develop effective responses.

Advocates say government funding for the Call It Out Register should be accompanied by broader, coordinated action, including prevention, education, accountability and mechanisms for redress.

“Together these measures can help create an Australia where First Peoples can thrive free from racism and discrimination,” the statement said.
