Drone Attack Forces Temporary Closure of Dubai International Airport

Dubai, United Arab Emirates:
Authorities have temporarily closed Dubai International Airport after a drone strike sparked a fire near the facility, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to the Dubai Media Office, the attack caused a blaze in a fuel storage tank located close to the airport. Emergency teams were deployed immediately and efforts to control the fire were ongoing at the time of the announcement. Flights were suspended as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff.

The airport, widely regarded as the world’s busiest hub for international passengers, handled nearly 90 million travellers in 2025, according to reports cited by BBC.

The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions following the outbreak of conflict between the United States–Israel alliance and Iran that began on February 28. Since the start of the war, missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region have intensified.

Gulf Arab countries have reportedly intercepted or faced more than 2,000 missile and drone attacks during the escalation. Targets have included U.S. diplomatic missions, military bases, oil infrastructure, ports, airports, hotels, and residential and office buildings.

Analysts say the United Arab Emirates has been particularly exposed to such attacks since normalising diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020. However, other Gulf states have also been affected, with several governments condemning Iran over the attacks.

Authorities have not yet confirmed when normal operations at Dubai International Airport will resume.
