The Northern Territory Government has acknowledged the passing of former parliamentarian Loraine Braham, paying tribute to her distinguished career and lasting contribution to public life in Central Australia and the Northern Territory.

Ms Braham served as the Member for Braitling in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 until her retirement in 2008. In doing so, she made history as the first woman from Central Australia elected to the Territory Parliament, paving the way for greater representation of women in leadership and decision-making roles.

A passionate and unwavering advocate for Alice Springs and Central Australia, Ms Braham was known for always placing the interests of her community at the forefront of her work.

During her parliamentary career, she held the esteemed office of Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly on two occasions, from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2001 to 2005. She was the first woman to hold the position, earning widespread respect for her integrity, fairness and strong commitment to democratic principles.

Ms Braham was also recognised for her independence and strength of character, never allowing party politics to overshadow her responsibility to represent the people of Alice Springs.

Beyond Parliament, her career spanned roles as an educator and local councillor, reflecting a lifelong dedication to public service. Her legacy endures not only through her achievements, but through the doors she opened for other women and the confidence she inspired across generations.

In recognition of her service and lifelong contribution to public life, a state memorial will be held in her honour.

Ms Braham is survived by family and friends, to whom the Northern Territory Government has extended its heartfelt condolences.
