A special tribunal in Bangladesh has handed down a death sentence to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ruling that she committed “crimes against humanity” while suppressing last year’s student-led protests.

The verdict was delivered on Monday by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), presided over by Judge Ghulam Murtaza, with Judges Mohammad Afiul Alam Mahmud and Mohammad Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury sitting on the three-member bench.

The case had named Hasina, the then–Home Minister, and the former Inspector General of Police as defendants. The court found all three guilty.

According to the tribunal, Hasina authorised security agencies to deploy drones to track demonstrators and approved the use of helicopter-dropped explosives in areas where protest gatherings were reported.

The ruling noted that testimonies from 54 witnesses were considered during the trial. Hasina did not appear before the court throughout the proceedings and is currently believed to be in India.
