The Albanese Government has announced it will recommend former Defence Secretary Greg Moriarty AO to the Governor-General for appointment as Australia’s next Ambassador to the United States.
Mr Moriarty brings decades of experience in defence, diplomacy and national security, having served in some of Australia’s most senior public service roles. He was Secretary of the Department of Defence from 2017, overseeing a period of major strategic reform and increased defence investment.
His overseas experience includes service at the United States Central Command headquarters during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as well as ambassadorial postings to Indonesia between 2010 and 2014 and to Iran from 2005 to 2008. Earlier in his career, Mr Moriarty served in Papua New Guinea and played a key role as Senior Negotiator with the Peace Monitoring Group on Bougainville.
In 2015, Mr Moriarty was appointed Australia’s first Counter-Terrorism Coordinator within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He later served as International and National Security Adviser and Chief of Staff to former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
During his tenure at Defence, Mr Moriarty oversaw the implementation of the National Defence Strategy following the Defence Strategic Review and worked closely with counterparts in the United States and the United Kingdom on the development of the AUKUS partnership.
The Government also acknowledged the service of outgoing Ambassador, the Hon Dr Kevin Rudd AC, thanking him for his contribution to strengthening Australia–US relations.
