Seatbelt enforcement has been tightened on ACT roads. From 3 November 2025, traffic cameras have been used to check whether drivers and passengers are wearing seatbelts and whether they are worn correctly.
According to ACT Government infringement statistics, a total of 2,839 seatbelt-related fines were issued between 3 and 30 November 2025.
Of these:
- 1,339 fines were issued because drivers were not wearing a seatbelt or were wearing it incorrectly.
- 1,500 fines were issued because passengers were not wearing a seatbelt or were wearing it incorrectly.
The department states that it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengers in the vehicle are wearing seatbelts correctly. Even if the mistake is made by a passenger, the fine is issued to the driver.
Road safety authorities warn that wearing a seatbelt incorrectly can cause the body to move forward during a crash, increasing the risk of serious injuries, particularly head injuries from hitting parts of the vehicle. For safe travel, the seatbelt should be worn straight across the shoulder and chest, and firmly across the hips. The department advises avoiding common mistakes such as wearing the belt under the arm or behind the back, over-reclining the seat, or leaving the belt twisted or loose.
All drivers and passengers are urged to wear seatbelts correctly on every trip, in every seat.
A properly worn seatbelt saves lives.
