The main construction contract for Canberra’s long-awaited Lyric Theatre has been awarded to Multiplex, marking a major milestone for the city’s cultural infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2026, with the project expected to be completed in 2028.
Designed as a purpose-built venue for large-scale productions, the new theatre will feature a state-of-the-art stage, advanced technical and performance capabilities, and high-quality acoustics. These features will enable Canberra to attract major musicals, ballet, opera and international touring acts that have previously bypassed the city due to the lack of a suitable venue.
The Lyric Theatre will be built on the northern side of The Playhouse and will accommodate up to 2,000 patrons. Key features include a large proscenium stage, an orchestra pit, and modern, inclusive amenities to enhance audience experience and accessibility.
Importantly, the Canberra Theatre Centre will remain open throughout the construction period, allowing the community to continue enjoying live performances while supporting surrounding local businesses.
The project forms part of a broader transformation of Canberra’s city centre, alongside light rail expansion, new public spaces and significant investment in cultural infrastructure.
