Light Rail Construction Blitz Across Canberra Throughout January

Canberra is undergoing a major construction push throughout January as works continue to connect the light rail network to the Commonwealth Park extension under the Light Rail Stage 2A project.
The construction, scheduled during the quieter school holiday period, aims to allow substantial progress while avoiding further major road closures in 2026. In addition to rail works, the project will deliver significant public realm improvements, including new traffic signals, street lighting, retaining walls, paving, road asphalting and landscaping. These upgrades will also prepare the city centre for wire-free light rail operations.
To support the works, several temporary traffic and pedestrian changes are in place. From 7:00am on Sunday 4 January to 5:00am on Monday 2 February, Northbourne Avenue is fully closed in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street, with detours provided and local access maintained. The intersection of Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue is also closed, along with pedestrian crossings at Alinga Street and the Alinga Street light rail stop. Pedestrians are advised to use alternative crossings at Rudd Street/Bunda Street or London Circuit/Northbourne Avenue.
In addition, from Monday 5 January to Sunday 1 February, City bus interchange platforms 1 to 4 are closed, with alternative bus arrangements in place during this period.
Authorities have advised that further changes will occur throughout January, including light rail service interruptions and additional lane closures on Northbourne Avenue. Weekly updates and full travel impact details are available at the ACT Government’s travel impacts website to help residents and visitors plan ahead.
The project marks a major step toward creating a more connected and modern Canberra, with safety remaining a priority during the construction period.
