A total of USD 350,000 has been provided by the Government of Nepal to assist in the reconstruction of two religious heritage sites in Myanmar that were damaged by a powerful earthquake in March, officials have confirmed.

According to the Embassy of Nepal in Yangon, USD 300,000 was allocated for the restoration of the Mahamuni Pagoda, one of Myanmar’s most revered Buddhist shrines. The cheque was formally handed over by Nepal’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Harishchandra Ghimire, to the Pagoda’s Secretary-General during a ceremony held at the temple complex in Mandalay.

An additional USD 50,000 was provided for the reconstruction of the Gangaghat Hindu Temple, a significant religious site for the Nepali diaspora community in Myanmar. The cheque was presented to the temple’s chairman, Pawan Bajoria.

In a statement, the Nepali Embassy said the assistance reflects Nepal’s commitment to safeguarding shared religious heritage and supporting the restoration of culturally significant landmarks affected by natural disasters.

The contribution underscores cultural and religious ties between Nepal and Myanmar, both predominantly Buddhist nations with longstanding historical connections. The move has been described as a gesture of solidarity following the earthquake that caused widespread damage across parts of Myanmar earlier this year.
