Paid Parental Leave Expanded to 26 Weeks as Australian Government Boosts Family Support
From 1 July, the Australian Government will expand Paid Parental Leave, allowing eligible parents to access up to 26 weeks of government-funded leave. The policy is designed to support new families by increasing time at home, raising payment rates, and widening eligibility.
Under the expanded scheme, families who take the full entitlement will receive close to $30,000 in total support, more than doubling the previous entitlement available before the current government reforms.
Key changes from 1 July
The updated Paid Parental Leave system includes three major improvements:
Extended leave period
Eligible parents will now be able to access up to 26 weeks of leave when welcoming a newborn or adopting a child, allowing more time for early childcare and family bonding.
Increased payment rate
The weekly payment rate will rise to $1,004.70. In addition, superannuation contributions on Paid Parental Leave have been included since July last year.
Higher income eligibility limits
More families will qualify due to increased income thresholds:
- Individual income limit: $186,487
- Family income limit: $386,525
Broader cost-of-living support
The reform is part of wider indexation changes affecting around 2.6 million Australians. More than 1.2 million families will see increases in Family Tax Benefit payments.
Key increases include:
- Higher Family Tax Benefit Part A and Part B rates
- Increased income and asset thresholds for pensions and Parenting Payment Single recipients
- Greater flexibility before payment reductions apply
Government perspective
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the expansion reflects the importance of early family time and financial support for new parents.
Minister for Women Katy Gallagher said the changes strengthen fairness and support modern shared parenting arrangements.
Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek highlighted the reforms as part of ongoing improvements to support working families.
