ACT Government launches “Make Your Next Choice Electric” tool for Canberra households

Canberra residents can now plan their transition to an all-electric home with the ACT Government’s Make Your Next Choice Electric online tool. Developed in partnership with consumer advocacy organisation CHOICE, the free service helps households create a personalised roadmap for replacing gas appliances and reducing energy costs.

The tool allows users to:

  • Build a personalised timeline for replacing gas appliances as they reach the end of their lifespan.
  • Estimate the upfront costs of electric upgrades.
  • Calculate potential savings on annual energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Access independent recommendations for energy-efficient heating, hot water and cooking appliances.

According to the ACT Government, the best time to switch is when existing appliances need replacing. New electric technologies such as induction cooktops, heat-pump hot water systems and reverse-cycle air conditioners can help households lower energy costs while reducing reliance on fossil fuel gas.

The initiative supports the ACT’s broader goal of transitioning away from fossil fuels and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. Canberra already operates on 100% renewable electricity, and the government is encouraging residents to make their next appliance choice electric when the time is right.
