Coppins Crossing Road & Commonwealth Avenue Closures for Bridge and Light Rail Works in Canberra

Canberra motorists are being advised to plan ahead as major road closures are in place to support construction of the new Molonglo River Bridge and the extension of Canberra’s light rail network.

Coppins Crossing Road Closure

To allow critical bridge works to proceed safely, Coppins Crossing Road between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue will be fully closed in both directions from 2:00am Monday, 15 June, until 6:00pm Wednesday, 17 June 2026 (weather permitting).

The closure will enable crews to install safety rails and protective screens on the southbound side of the new Molonglo River Bridge, a project designed to improve connectivity between Canberra’s growing western suburbs, including Denman Prospect and Whitlam.

Commonwealth Avenue Closure

As part of the Light Rail Stage 2A project, Commonwealth Avenue northbound between the Parkes Way off-ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed to traffic during scheduled construction works. Albert Street West will also be temporarily closed while work continues to extend light rail services from the city to Commonwealth Park.

Detours will be in place for all affected routes, and motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow traffic management directions.

Authorities have advised that additional contingency days may be required if weather conditions delay the scheduled works.
