Australia Expands Free Mental Health Access as 500,000 People Seek Support

Canberra, Australia — More than 500,000 people across Australia have accessed free mental health support through the country’s Medicare Mental Health Centres, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

The Australian Government has expanded the network to 56 centres nationwide, offering people a pathway to mental health support without requiring a referral or a prior appointment.

The centres are intended to make it easier for people experiencing mental health challenges to seek professional support without facing the barriers often associated with accessing healthcare.

Prime Minister Albanese said getting mental health assistance should not itself become an additional challenge for people who are struggling.

The expansion is part of Australia’s broader efforts to improve access to mental health services and provide more accessible community-based support.

Key:

  • 500,000+ Australians have accessed support.
  • 56 Medicare Mental Health Centres are now operating nationwide.
  • No referral or appointment is required to access the service.
