Henderson Defence Precinct Set to Create Thousands of Jobs in WA
The Australian and Western Australian governments have confirmed the site for the new Henderson Defence Precinct, a major project expected to strengthen the state’s defence and shipbuilding industries.
The precinct, in Perth’s south, will support around 10,000 direct jobs in Western Australia over the next two decades, according to the federal government. The project is backed by an initial $12 billion funding commitment, as part of wider defence investment in the state.
The facility will be used to build and maintain vessels for the Australian Defence Force, including future Navy ships and Army landing craft. It will also provide infrastructure to support the maintenance of Australia’s future conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS program.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the project would create opportunities for local workers while supporting Australia’s long-term defence capabilities.
The government said the project will now move into its concept design phase, with further work to be undertaken with the WA Government, industry and other stakeholders.
The Henderson precinct is expected to become a major centre for naval shipbuilding and sustainment, supporting skilled employment and local industry in Western Australia for decades to come.
