Kendra News Australia – Canberra

Canberra, Australia – As the Nepali community continues to grow rapidly in Canberra, several social organisations have emerged and are actively contributing to community welfare. Each organisation has its own mission and area of focus, yet all share a common goal: supporting Nepali people, promoting Nepali culture, assisting newcomers, and strengthening Nepal’s identity and tourism abroad.

The Embassy of Nepal to Australia is also located in Canberra, alongside decades-old Nepali social organisations that have continuously served the community’s needs.

1. Sanatan Samaj Australia (SSA)

Sanatan Samaj Australia (SSA) is primarily a faith-based organisation, but it has been conducting some of the largest cultural and religious events for the Nepali community in Canberra as well as Australia. It is the only Nepali-run organisation that organises grand celebrations such as Nepali New Year, Teej, Krishna Janmashtami, Mahashivaratri, and Dashain with traditional rituals and large gatherings.

Formally registered under the Associations Incorporation Act 1991 (ACT) on 4 May 2020, SSA’s main objectives are:

  • promoting Sanatan culture and scriptures,
  • celebrating Hindu festivals and encouraging community participation,
  • establishing a Pashupatinath Temple in Canberra to support Sanatan religious activities, and
  • collaborating with other organisations for community welfare.

Although officially registered in 2020, the organisation had already been active since 2019, organising major festivals such as Teej (31 August 2019), Dashain–Durga Puja (4 October 2019), Mahashivaratri (21 February 2020), Ashtami Puja (24 October 2020), and Tulsi Puja (29 November 2020).

SSA is also known for hosting one of the most vibrant Nepali New Year celebrations in Australia, complete with fireworks, cultural performances, and large community gatherings.

By organising major festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, Teej, Dashain, Tihar, Nepali New Year, and Shivaratri, SSA has been bringing the Nepali community together and strengthening cultural unity, harmony, and identity.

SSA is currently working towards its major long-term goal: the construction of a Pashupatinath Temple in Canberra. The organisation is actively progressing through procedures with ACT and federal authorities. Achieving this dream requires collective support from the entire Nepali community.

If you wish to join, support, or learn more about SSA and its temple project, you may contact the current President, Mr. Santosh Malla, or connect through SSA’s social media platforms. The more united we are, the sooner this dream will become a reality.
