Sydney Woman Charged Over Alleged Online Death Threat to Federal MP

Sydney, Australia – April 24, 2026

A 24-year-old woman from Yennora in southwest Sydney has been charged after allegedly making online threats to kill a federal parliamentarian.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that its National Security Investigations (NSI) team launched an inquiry in March 2026 following a social media post believed to contain a serious threat.

Authorities traced the post to the woman, leading to the execution of a search warrant at a Yennora residence on 9 April. During the operation, police seized a mobile phone, which will undergo forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

The woman was issued a court attendance notice on 24 April and is scheduled to appear before Fairfield Local Court on 17 June 2026.

She faces nine charges of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill or cause serious harm, contrary to section 474.15 of the Criminal Code (Cth). Each offence carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

AFP Acting Inspector Joel Rivers said threats against public officials are taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated.

“Anonymous accounts do not protect individuals from being identified,” he said.
“The AFP has the tools and expertise to track down those who use social media to issue threats.”

The AFP’s NSI teams were established in October 2025 under Commissioner Krissy Barrett to combat threats to national security and social cohesion.

Authorities have reiterated that online platforms are not beyond the reach of law enforcement, warning that individuals engaging in threatening behaviour will face significant legal consequences.
